Local Tourism

Chippenham is one of the oldest towns in England (King Alfred the Great held his court here in the 9th Century) and the town is an ideal base for touring the surrounding areas of Wiltshire, Somerset and the Cotswolds. The World Heritage City of Bath is within easy reach as are Castle Combe and Lacock, two of the most beautiful villages in England.

There are many interesting towns and villages to visit in the area, and a wide variety of places to walk or just take in the scenery. The market town of Devizes with its famous flight of canal locks is within easy reach. Swindon (renowned for its railway history) is only 20 minutes drive away.

For prehistoric interest, North Wiltshire offers serious competition to the more famous stone circle of Stonehenge (although this is only one hour’s drive from the site). The ancient track known as the Ridgeway runs along the crest of the Marlborough Downs. The Avebury stone circles are regarded as one of the most important prehistoric monuments in Britain, and nearby Silbury Hill and the notorious crop circles still baffle the experts!
